Technically, as there is permanent ice at both poles then we
are in an ice age - currently though we are in an interglacial period where the ice is melting back rather than advancing.
It was accepted in the 60’s by some scientists that the Earth would continue to cool, but the public messaging was somewhat less than optimal. The idea of the UK being covered in ice within a lifetime was ludicrous - these timescales run to tens of thousands of years.
