No, naming him isn’t a problem per se. Simply naming somebody does not compromise a subsequent trial. If charges proceed, and the guy ends up in court, we will all know his name anyway. The risk to the mail is mostly arising from the question, what happens if he’s not charged? they are open to a civil action for libel at that point. It is with that in mind that they have led their coverage with all the quotes from neighbours saying what a lovely unassuming guy he is. They are defending themselves pre-emptively against any claim that they have damaged his reputation.
