The British Medical Association has voted to accept a pay deal for junior doctors, bringing an end to years of strike action that has cost the NHS billions of pounds.
In a ballot of 33,000 resident doctors, formerly known as junior doctors, 53 per cent of members voted to accept a pay deal that will give them a 6.6 per cent pay rise on average and create thousands more jobs.
Dr Jack Fletcher, chair of the Resident Doctors Committee (RDC), said: “Resident doctors have spoken. They have decided that the current offer is sufficient to continue on the road to pay restoration, and sufficient to address the absurd lack of jobs in the NHS. The strikes will now end.”
It finally draws a line under three years of industrial action which has seen resident doctors walk out for 65 days in total, in 16 different rounds of strikes.
