Ultimately, Starmer has largely been a failure and lost all confidence of his MPs. It's slightly surprising how badly he has done, but he seemed to have no plan at all.

It was the cost of borrowing that spiked after
she announced large tax cuts with no plan to pay for them. She lost the confidence of the bond markets, which spiked everyone's mortgages, and the Tories had to get rid of her. It was her fault.
You can't say she wasn't warned, either. Sunak himself had said her plans would cause this, but she played the 'project fear' card and promptly tanked the economy and her leadership.
As for the general election, yes, it will be hypocritical. It always is when a PM resigns. When Brown took over, there were plenty of people demanding an election that didn't demand it when the Tories changed leader. Now there will be people who demanded an election after each Conservative PM changed that will say no election is needed. Happens all the time.
