As per others, it'll just work from the get go.
Good engineering practice however is to ensure a good light reading before syncing the ONT. Generally check whether the light is between the required range of -13db to -27db whilst a lot of testing is carried out during build, you still want to eliminate a bad splice somewhere from the house to the CBT splice at the node.
What ONT you get depends on the headend rack at the exchange. Adtran ONTs only function with Adtran racks. Huawei, Nokia and Zyxel all function interconnected.
Huawei is being phased out and the standard install now appears to be leaning towards the 2.5g ONTs across the board. The Nokia and Adtran offerings basically just look like the one Pip posted above. The Zyxel ones on the otherhand are big units (Below article is old and Zyxels are now in the network)
