Oh, wait, I slipped up. If B is even, B MOD 2 = 0; if not, it's 1. So it should be:
A = 2 - (B MOD 2)
So A is 1 if B is odd, 2 if it's even. Yes, that's right.
Shows how long it's been since I did any programming.  Doesn't invalidate my point re CPU time.
And though it depends on your POV (come back, Obi-Wan, all is forgiven!), the job loss was a little bit my fault, I admit.
