Loud explosions jolted neighborhoods near the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base in the eastern Caracas community of La Carlota, residents said, with smoke visibly rising from one of the air base’s hangars. One woman watching from her apartment with a clear view of the base said the detonations were “deafening.” Residents in several parts of the city, including near La Carlota, reported experiencing power outages.
It was not immediately clear what caused the explosions, but the Trump administration in recent weeks has escalated a military confrontation with the government of President Nicolás Maduro and increasingly threatened a land attack. President Donald Trump recently said U.S. forces were responsible for an explosion at a marine loading facility in Venezuela, in the first known direct attack on land in the South American country.
