O2 TV

The Times ran a paywalled article recently about O2 registering the O2 TV trade mark at the UK's intellectual property office.

I've dug out the registration which was on 10 January by a fully-owned subsidiary of Telefonica SA.

The Times suggested that VM O2 might operate a new streaming TV service under this brand.

Quote:
Sources stressed that VMO2 has not committed to launching O2 TV and that it is unlikely to be announced as a new service before next year. The company recently registered the brand name as a trademark in this country.

Media and telecoms analyst Paolo Pescatore said he expected the company to make more of the “premium” O2 name, after struggles with Virgin Media’s brand, and that therefore “it would make sense to then offer TV under this brand”.

VMO2 declined to comment.

I think it might just be sensible planning for the possibility of unifying the service under one brand, and this is one thing that needs to be in place if that option is chosen.
