Change within the Catholic church is never going to be something that will happen on a grand scale overnight. You have over a millennium of well-trodden traditions and rituals. None of this is meant as a knock on Catholicism, as this is neither the time nor the thread for it, but he certainly gave off more liberal vibes whilst respecting said traditions.
I do think over the coming decades Catholicism will lean somewhat more towards modernisation in several ways, but this will only start with careful baby steps.
Given the responsibilities placed upon his shoulders and how he dealt with them, I believe he will go down in history as one of the pioneers of such changes.
RIP indeed, and I wish the very best to his successor.
