As far as Virgin Media are concerned:

1) The TV agreements permit recording "for the purpose of viewing at a more convenient time" only. They are not designed as an archive.

2) VM TV boxes are rented, you never own them, so in effect also never own the content recorded on them. All VM HD channels are encrypted including BBC, ITV etc.

Sky can block recordings of encrypted channels, such as Sky Sports, so that you can no longer view the recordings if you stop subscribing to the channels.

Your Sky+ box recordings would continue to work if you paid a nominal fee (I think it was £10 a month) to Sky to retain the recording features, otherwise these were also switched off & the box ceased to be a PVR.
