It also is more respectful of parliamentary convention which is that the individual the monarch is advised to invite to become PM should be the one most likely to have the confidence of the house. It is inherently unstable (as well as dishonest) if the individual chosen does not really have the support of their own back benchers, and they are only playing along until enough of them can get a coup going.
