Max Verstappen has been hit with a five-place grid penalty at this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix after Red Bull changed his power unit for the sixth time this season.
In Mexico last weekend he missed valuable practice sessions after an intake air circuit leakage could not be rectified, eliminating another engine from his “pool” — the amount allocated for the season. Using an older engine during the grand prix meant Verstappen’s Red Bull was one of the slowest in the straights, as Helmut Marko, the special adviser to the team, mentioned after the race.
The Interlagos circuit, which favours overtaking, is perhaps the best place for Verstappen to take his five-place penalty. It is hoped the rest of the engine components will not need to be replaced, so further penalties will be avoided. At Spa this season he took a ten-place grid penalty for fitting his fifth internal combustion unit of the year — this time he will face only half the sanction because it is the second occasion he has passed the season limit of four. The five places will be added to his qualifying result on Saturday, rather than affecting the sprint race.
