My senior technical instructor in NATO worked there in the 50s and 60s and called it "The Ranch", a gawd awful piece of land where civilian aero engineers seemed to want to kill test pilots by pushing them to extend the working envelope of their aircraft.
He told a story of how pilots would approach the radar site, subsonic and level. They would then climb as fast as possible on a specific climb angle, before then dropping the nose and diving at the radar station, achieving Mach1 within seconds. To the scope dopes (radar operators) it would seem like the aircraft had suddenly stopped, hovered for a while, then suddenly accelerated to Mach1. The basis for many a UFO story.....
