Smart meters literally cannot get your personal data, nor store it or leak it. It's literally a box in your home to monitor your energy usage and report the usage to the energy suppliers. It's got no more information than a traditional 'dumb' meter.

The motivation is to make life simpler. That's usually why new technology is invented.
