Well cassette tapes are really just the holder for the tape, reel to reel is even older has been around since the 1930s. Most tape formats are just different ways to store and play the magnetic tape itself as well as the different size and width of tape.

The compact cassette that we all know was invented in 1962 and released in August 1963 by Philips. . However the first compact, consumer focussed, easy to use cassette, was the RCA tape cartridge and was created in 1958.
