Yes that's what Android Auto does in any car if your car is compatible with Android Auto you may benefit from other free features, it may even support wireless Android auto, my preference is Waze(owned by Google) over Google maps for Satnav, it is community driven so it will tell you where pot holes are police and stationary traffic as well as better speed camera notifications. I would be happy to use Google maps all the time if it had those features though.
So I've been using the wireless Android Auto dongle for nearly a week and it's fantastic, love not having to drag phone out pocket and plug it in on my commute to work.

Shouldn't be confusing if you understand what Android Auto does.
Your car supports wireless Android Auto if that pops up on car display without plugging phone in.
You now have the ability to chose what Satnav or music streaming apps you wish to use on your cars display and many others, your phone data will be used.
These are apps you first install on your phone.
