Continuous production on a permanent set is relatively cheap, especially when there’s a need to justify costs on BBC1 by ratings. Niche productions and high cost ones are the ones they’ll be making fewer of.

Having said that, it looks like the budget for Doctor Who has become astronomical because Disney+ has bought rest-of-the-world distribution rights on condition that there’s an uptick in FX and guest star profiles.
