It depends on the contract. In theory, there are 2 elements, carriage costs (payable by the broadcaster) and revenue share (the share of subscription income paid to the broadcaster by Virgin & dependant on the subscription tier). These can be offset in the contract so that there is only a payment in one direction. I wouldn't like to guess at whether cash moved from CNN to Virgin or vice versa, as I said, it would depend on the terms of the contract.
