That's exactly why excess deaths is the best way to measure it. Those people would not have died it if were not for Covid. So even if they didn't have Covid, it caused their death.

It is a big problem, because there is a huge grey area. For example, if you have a chronic illness such as
COPD, catch Covid, get hospitalised and die, have you died of Covid, or just with it? There is no clear answer.
