It's similar (in a way) to 'thinking outside the box' . . someone comes up with an idea that is outside the recognised and accepted boundaries, everyone else laughs and considers you a nutcase

Sometimes it works, but it is generally safer to stay inside the box and 'fit in' with what the majority will accept and go along with.
