Ever since Surround Sound TVs came out the sound mixes on shows have made hearing the TV a nightmare, things get made assuming you have the latest high end cinema equipment and it sounds awful on all other equipment. The mix is always poor, the balance is all wrong, and you can't hear the dialogue over the other sounds, or the music is 10x louder than the dialogue.
At least with stereo they know everyone has two speakers, the problem is that they may broadcast stereo, but they don't mix the sound to get the best out of it. Stereo isn't the problem, it's the way the makers have assembled the audio.
Proper 5.1 is great, don't get me wrong, most people don't have the right set-up.
