Re: is there an issue with virgin superhub 3 with bt wholehome wifi disks?
I used to have 3 BT Wholehome wifi discs connected to my Hub3 which was set to router mode with the hub3 wifi disabled.
The BT Wholehome Wifi Discs are not routers, they are only WIFI Ap's. They do not have any routing functions at all, this is all carried out by the router. Whether you use your own separate one or the HUB3 in router mode.
But what i found was when the internet dropped out the router function on the hub would just die and in turn the discs would need to be rebooted once the hub3 had re-established a connection to the internet. This was super annoying for my IoT devices, as smart lights would stop working for example even though and internet connection was not needed and my NAS wouldn't work because the HUB3 in router mode would cause it to lose its Local IP to the devices in my house.
To get around this i bought a separate router which in my case was a Edgerouter X and set the HUB3 to modem mode, that way if the internet went down, the LAN wouldn't, as the Edgerouter X would still be routing local area network traffic and local IP address would remain intact. My BT wholehome discs and all the other devices kept their local IP addresses and when the internet connection was restored on the HUB3 side all devices would have access to the internet again. I've never needed to reboot the BT Discs, reboot the Edgerouter X or reboot the hub3 which is in modem mode. This set up for me has been fantastic and have had no issues.
My network looks like this:-
HUB3 in modem mode connected to Edgerouter X and a 24port gigabit switch connected to the Edgerouter X. The 3 BT wholehome discs in different parts of the house connected via ethernet back the 24port switch.
So in short...buy a router (it doesn't need to have wifi because you have the BT Wholehome Discs) and set the hub3 in modem mode.
