His whole approach since the nomination has been to avoid doing much of anything and let Trump do the talking. He rarely makes interventions and the campaign sometimes spends the day off. Some of this might be COVID and people have speculated it's because he is worse than they're letting on.

I think that's why the debate was such a risk for him because he couldn't hide and would have to come out and perform. In the event he didn't seem as bad as has been made out and if the debate was argued to a draw that suits him fine.
Still two more debates to go.
