They were probably scouring the beach looking for exotic goods (toilet rolls, tins of beans, pork scratchings, Fiat Uno, etc) that had fallen off the back of one of the many passing freighters
Interestingly, I was there about a month ago and the beach was completely clear of plastic rubbish . . obviously a much better class of visitor than the seychelles, bermuda etc
