Why do radio recordings take up so much disc space?

I've just been having a clearout of radio programmes that I will never get the time to listen to as I thought that this would free up a bit of space. I wasn't expecting much, seeing as these recordings were audio only.

A massive 20% has been freed up! Do recordings from the radio also record the black screen or something? I'm taken aback that they actually use so much space.
