it was both iPads that wouldn't connect to the wifi, and it seems that the Router was Not Guilty. Virgin community suggested upping both iPads to latest ios (which I often don't bother doing), as current one (12.1.1.) has superior wifi bits.
Anyway, after upgrading both iPads to current level, haven't had any further problems with connection to wifi, so seems (fingers crossed) that it was the problem.
