The Comcast and Verizon initiatives are seen as a reaction to the proposed AT&T-Warner deal which itself is seen as a reaction to Netflix and Amazon Prime. Comcast does have a pre-existing content company (NBC Universal) but Verizon doesn't.

Comcast has its roots in cable TV whilst Verizon and AT&T are the equivalents of BT in America ie traditional telephony, IPTV and mobile businesses.

Interesting times and adds another dimension to the Sky-Fox ongoing situation. | Verizon are also a cable tv/broadband company. It's the service my friend in the USA uses which i use.
