Whilst LVADs are not routinely funded by NHS Wales, all patient cases are assessed on a case by case basis, if the patient’s clinician considers there are exceptional circumstances.

As such requests for LVADs are considered using the Individual Patient Funding Request (IPFR) process. This process allows patients who are most likely to gain clinical benefit, access to treatments which are not routinely funded by NHS Wales.

l had one of the first experimental LVAD's on the market just over 16 years ago as l had been seriously ill for a period and the consultant at the hospital said l had three choices and that was to be taken up to London to have a LVAD implanted for several years , go on the transplant list but l will likely to be dead before they called me up and the other choice was basically meeting my maker and l was lucky at that time that l had a choice and chose the first choice and thus a few weeks later my condition deteriorated to the point that l only had 24-48 hours to live so they airlifted me to London and operated on me 12 hours later and thankfully l am still here now with my own heart still although with limited heart function and a ICD now implanted in me.
