If your old modem really did look like
this, then putting the SH3 into modem mode will give you the exact same result you have to do. The old ambits were "just" a modem with no routing functionality.
The suggestion here is to make use of the SH3's router mode because having A router is better than having no router - you get a firewall, you get free Wireless, you get to plug in more than one device. The SH3 serves as a very basic router.
