Passengers will suffer strike action next week by Southern Trains. But l fully support any strike, that makes it safer for passengers to travel on tubes or Main line trains.
When passengers travel at any time of the day or night. There must be extra staff on trains, and at stations.
I was at a Main Line station recently. And there was NO ONE on duty, yet passengers on the platforms.
What happens if someone is taken ill, or is attacked. You cannot always rely on CCTV, as it takes approx. 30 minutes to be called or you have to depend on public support.
Govia, who run the service, are in danger of losing the licence. Due to constant problems on there network
Having an extra person on the train is paramount.

Silly question I know, but did you actually read the link you gave?

Govia Thameslink say the role of the conductor needs to change to modernise their service which will improve punctuality and customer service. They say the changes will not lead to any staff losing their jobs and will not affect safety on the trains:

No job losses involved, ie just as many staff will be on the trains. If anything, the proposed changes would help passengers, as the conductors would have one less thing to do. They could carry on dealing with a passenger issue, and not get diverted by having to deal with closing the doors.

The Rail Delivery Group, which aims to improve the rail network, says the changes to the conductors' role, which will mean drivers operating train doors instead, are needed: We already know that drivers operating the doors on trains is a safe way of working. At the heart of this dispute are changes that would mean a better on board service for passengers and less disruption when problems affect the railway. In the interests of passengers, it's time to implement these changes and end this dispute.

They're employing just as many people, so how is it saving money?
