The retail Tivo in the US is being discontinued as most people who want to spend on subscription TV get their PVRs from their cable or satellite companies and those that don't want to pay subscription fees don't want to pay Tivo fees either! I don't think any of the Tivos distributed via cable companies will allow external hard drive functionality as the content providers would charge a lot more for their content if this functionality was permitted.
