I don't know.
But the alternative could have been not having any of the Sky HD channels for the last 6 years, or paying significantly more for the last 6 years in order for Virgin Media to have them and keep their own channels.
It's great looking back over the last 6 years and going 'oh if only VM had done this that or the other' but channel deals aren't done with a time machine.
Virgin Media customers were telling Virgin Media they wanting the Sky HD channels so Virgin Media did a deal that got their customers the Sky HD channels.
