It seems to me that female genital mutilation is an example of a fairly widespread cultural practice which has been, until recently, turned a blind eye to so as not to offend certain communities. I think the west in general has been rather too accommodating of practices which are alien to it and this is one reason why integration hasn't been all that successful IMHO. Perhaps that's a subject for another thread however.
