If you select a programme from your wish list, you will see on the right hand side of your screen a short list of options. The first is 'Get only in HD'. If you 'OK' that, your wish list preference will be recorded on SD.

To do this, select 'modify recording options' from the list at the bottom of the screen and just change the relevant option.
