A landline is essential, even as just a back up. What if you have a 999 emergency and no credit/power/signal on your mobile ? If there is a powercut the landline still works (as long as you don't just have cordless) , most mobile networks go down.
None of this detracts from the thrust of the thread, that VM are thieving capitalist swine; however Sky etc. are exactly the same. A colleague swaps between SKY/VM annually to get the best new customers deals - it is the thing to do if you can be bothered, which I and most others can't. It must cause them a lot of admin costs, guess we should all do the same.
