WTF is bluetooth if it isn't wireless???

What protocol to Xbox/PS wireless controllers use? A quick google came up with this (Not Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth (which the PS3 and Wii use). Some sort of proprietary 2.4 GHz protocol)

I remember I bought an adapter to connect my 360's wireless controllers to my PC, I stopped using after throwing 3 controllers at the wall playing battlefield.
