In the USA, that would have proved to be a wise decision as all the TV networks are now starting to provide online access independent of a cable subscription.

In the UK, with BT acquiring AMC, we are seeing the opposite; a TV network tied into a specific TV provider.

But at least, the 'usual villain' associated with these things (Sky) is doing things right by providing independent access via Now TV. BT should do the same with AMC.
Yes if VM want to compete with Sky and BT they need to play big. To be fair on BT I have been impressed on how far they have pushed into TV in such a short time, not just on the Sport side but the recent AMC deal as well.

Channels like Atlantic and AMC may show plenty of poor "fill-in" material, but they just need a few "star" series to make an effect. I am not a Game of Thrones fan but it is very popular. And for those zombie addicts (like me), Fear of the Walking Dead (even with mixed reviews in the USA) is a key attraction for AMC.

VM need to find routes into popular material or customers will just find other routes, like Now TV as you mention.
