As usual the installation fell over after the first reboot at 30% giving no reason.
Things I haven't done include disconnecting my addition internal hard drives and using an iso disc.
Incidentally I did a pre-installation check for Windows 8.1 which is supposed to cover many of the possible Windows 10 issues. It found no compatibility issues that might affect installation.
My final, and this time I mean final, attempt will be with an iso disc. No way am I disconnecting my internal hard drives. If MS cannot come up with an upgrade process better than this they should be ashamed. I know it is a free upgrade, but they have a duty of care to all those non-savvy computer users out there.
BTW windows 10 installed with no problems onto my son's i7 laptop, from 8.1.

Not sure how relevant it is but try updating the bios for the motherboard.
Loads of reports that unplugging
Sata drives/dvd optical drives fixes the freezing for some people so try that.
