It never even used to require a log in to use, it just checked if you were on a BY/NTL IP. I just had a look at one of my old ntlworld.com accounts and there's no mail in the webmail sent box after 2012 which is the year they migrated it to google IIRC. I am using SSL and authentication on the SMTP server (virginmedia.com) settings
