This is correct, however the problem is that Virgin has different SMTP settings to support the old legacy blueyonder/ntl accounts and they don't always go through Google. It never even used to require a log in to use, it just checked if you were on a BY/NTL IP. I'm not sure if that's been "Fixed" though but if not and someone's still using the unauthenticated SMTP server, there's no way to know which account sent the email.
