The reason i think they are real is Sky have been experimenting with showing sport on Sky 1 for the last couple of years. We have had darts, Premier League, Champions League and F1 and these are some of the sports mentioned.
One benefit is making a Sky subscription to basic channels better through Sky than through VM or TalkTalk. For that reason I can't see them being on VM.
