Re: superhub 2 hard reset problem

So in a nutshell the shub doesn't hard reset back to router mode
Sometimes you need to do a bit more than a pinhole reset. You'll need to hold the pinhole down for a good 30s, then power off the device (while still holding down the pinhole!) for another few seconds, then power it back on (again, while keeping the pinhole depressed!). This should reset it. If it's not resetting this way, it's faulty.

and in modem mode the active ethernet port seems to have stopped working.
Virgin's modems (and this includes the hubs in modem mode) are quite finnicky about swapping devices around on them. IF you just unplug one device, then plug another in, it will not work. At the very least you have to power off the modem (hub) to get it to allocate an IP.

The reasoning is somewhat convoluted, but the short version is that your modem only expects to have one device plugged into it at a time, when you plug a second device (even without the first connected, even into the correct port), it will refuse to speak to it and that device won't get a connection.

Sometimes, very occasionally, even switching the modem off and on with the new device connected won't result in a connection. To force this to work, there's a special procedure you must follow.

Step 1): Remove/unscrew the white coax from your hub
Step 2): Power off the hub
Step 3): Connect your new device
Step 4): Power the hub on (WITHOUT the coax connected)
Step 5): Wait.

Now after a few mins of your hub trying to get an internet connection, it will give up and just allocated your machine an internal IP (192.x.x.x).

Side note: If you're struggling to access your hub/modem and it's stuck in modem mode, you can use this technique at this point to gain access to the hub configuration page and switch it back to router mode. The alternative is to statically set an IP on your machine of something like 192.168.0.5 and that should be enough, however if you're not comfortable with doing that, this method works fine.

Once your machine has received it's 192.x.x.x IP, it's time to continue.

Step 6): Screw the coax cable back in (DO NOT POWER OFF THE HUB!).
Step 7): Wait.

This does some fancy shenanigans with Virgin's UBR, which should force it to allocate you a correct IP and allow this device to go online. You might need to quickly reboot your hub one more time, but this is mostly to force your device to pick up the new IP. You should now be online.
