Russia are doing nothing more than bringing a clapped out tank to a drone fight.
They are quite hideously outmatched conventionally, and even Mr Putin isn't stupid enough to push the big red button.
The fact that he's so outmatched conventionally actually helps keep things stable - he knows the US have no need to resort to nukes, they can happily hand his arse to him without them and both know it.
