I left it earlier to have a think about it but the more I thought about, the more I cannot understand why I'd have to take out a new contract when I am simply removing a service and downgrading the broadband?
Anyone else come across this and can offer any explanation? Or have I been told a bunch of rubbish?

Is fibre over your BT phoneline not an option in your area or do you require faster speeds still ? I use BT's FTTC and the service has been generally pretty good it also allows you to switch between different providers on the Openreach network such as Sky , PlusNet , BT , Talk Talk etc.
