Hannan makes a good point (as usual). If the usual loyalties that normally apply when a general election comes round, have broken down, there is no reason for the 'main' parties to continue to support FPTP - the perceived advantage that system gives them no longer applies and the final outcome of the election may be perverse. If we have truly reached the stage where every election is going to result in an even split between Tory and Labour, with significant national or regional support for half a dozen others, then perhaps it is time for a system that will produce fairer results based on our voting patterns.
Personally, I would still favour a system of two main parties, with popular engagement with them through open primaries and local recall. One party in government is more predictable and can more easily be held to account against a published manifesto. But if those days are gone, then perhaps FPTP has to go to.
