I would say you have been lied to. As such, I think you would have every right to cancel your contract without penalty as you have been mis sold the service.

I would suggest you check with your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, as I am not a solicitor, and they may even be able to help you deal with Virgin.

Regarding your TV, everything you mention is available on Freeview, and it may be easier to buy a Freeview box, with a large button remote. Regarding your internet connection, any supplier should be able to provide a connection adequate for Skype.

While I've been a happy Virgin customer for years (since the Cable and Wireless days), I would not stay with a company if they had so blatantly lied to me. Unless you actually want the Tivo service, in which case Virgin is your only option in this country.
BIB spot on Stuart i texted my cousin who is a solicitor and she has confirmed the op can indeed cancel without penalty as they was mis-sold a product. Also they can demand a refund of any monies paid too.
