Such a fallacy. I lived in Leicester (one of the most multicultural cities in the UK) for a few years and during the 2010 World Cup. Your national flag was everywhere. Hanging from people's windows, pubs, offices, lamp posts, displayed on cars etc
What I think causes people to think that is the knuckle-draggers from the BNP and other similar far-right groups have a habit of displaying the St George's flag rather than the Union flag. That way it gets associated with racism.
I've always said the same about the home nations: whichever you belong to, wave your flag high and with pride. It's not tribalism, it's a celebration
