Absolutely, most viri etc get in from deliberate user actions, the easiest mistake being to click on a file or link and expect the correct application to open. As a double check I always open the application and then let it open the file. If the file isn't what the app is expecting it'll flag it up.

Another horror is the download that also carries an extra payload or that "helpful" installer.

I ran my old laptop with no protection other than an external firewall for over three years and a recent checkup with AVG showed clean as a whistle.
