What does surprise me though is why so many cyclists, who we're told feel very vulnerable and are concerned about the attitude of motorists toward them, don't bother having lights, proper safety clothing etc. and generally put themselves in danger e.g. by cycling up the inside of huge trucks and buses at junctions when they could just stay clear and wait a few seconds. Seems crazy to me.
