I too doubt whether race came into play in this case.

I think it was a question of bringing a charge that could be proved. With neither parent putting forward an explanation or being willing to give evidence that would have backed a murder charge I suspect that the CPS would have chosen a lesser charge over a charge of murder for which this man could have been found not guilty on the evidence held.
